Tucked into the landscape with a natural material palette, Engawa house sits firmly in the landscape. The adjacent wetland with mature trees provides further protection from the elements and privacy for the residents. Engawa is a traditional Japanese architectural term - desribing a space that acts as a buffer between the interior of the house and the garden, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living.

Engawa House

Rangitahi Peninsula, Raglan

Wild weather and blazing summer heat are no match for this residence. Deep covered outdoor areas provide protection from the elements. Pocket doors tuck away into the cladding line to create expansive openings in the buildings exterior envelope. Hardwearing interior finishes of tiles, bamboo, ceaserstone and stainless steel create a robust family space.
